Halotherapy Halo = Salt

History

Most of us all heard of wet salt therapy, such as neti pots and float pods, but halotherapy is a form of dry salt therapy. Halotherapy has it origins in the salt mines of Eastern Europe. Doctors found that the men working in the salt mines seemed to experience good health. They believed the micro-sized salt particles that were being disbursed into the air were having positive effects on the mens' health. For years, the only way people could experience a dry salt treatment was to spend extended periods in the salt mines underground. Finally, in 1985 the first halogenerator was invented, making salt therapy possible for anyone.

What is halotherapy (dry salt therapy)?

Halotherapy is natural, non-invasive, touchless and drug free, using only 99.9% pure sodium chloride. Salt is absorbent, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. During halotherapy, salt is crushed into a size of roughly 2-5 microns or smaller (for reference, hair is around 50-70 microns, pollen is 30-50 microns and ragweed is around 20 microns), and then it is dispersed into the air where it enters your respiratory tract and covers your skin. Sessions may improve your respiratory tract, skin, sleep and recovery.

According to the Salt Therapy Association: As the salt travels in the salt room, these salt particles of dry sodium chloride are inhaled into the respiratory system. The dry salt naturally starts absorbing allergens, toxins and foreign substances into your lungs and throughout your respiratory tract. Dry salt may help to reduce inflammation and open airway passages. The micro-sized crystal structure of pure NaCl particles breaks loose and clears out all of the ‘bad stuff’. This is the basis for how dry salt therapy can impact people suffering from respiratory conditions like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, COPD and others. The properties of dry salt also absorb impurities and provide anti-bacterial properties that benefit the skin such as acne, psoriasis and eczema as well as regulates the skin's micro-circulation.

People who include Halotherapy in their wellness routine may find relief from a variety of respiratory conditions such as:

  • Asthma
